BAMER Family Service

The BAMER (Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic & Refugee) Family Service is a support service that provides assistance to families who are experiencing mental health problems.

The BAMER Family Service has developed through the demand of support and needs of the community. It initially started as a BAMER mental health carers support service however, due to the type of support needed and the increase of the client groups requesting help along with the absence of specific support needed by the carers and families we decided to replace it with a project to support the whole family. We support specifically BAMER families in all aspects, empowering them to access services, informing them on services available and engaging with other services to ensure they are receiving the relevant support. We cover the entirety of the Liverpool area.

We provide:

  • Emotional and practical support.
  • ESOL groups and health and wellbeing activities.
  • Training courses. Qualifications include interpreting L1 and L2, health and safety and food hygiene.
  • Training for community leaders providing them with the knowledge and support to assist those in the community e.g. dementia champions and digital champions.
  • Language support.
  • Support with reading letters and forms, assisting with phone calls to services.
  • Support with setting up Universal Credit accounts and regularly accessing them with the client to assist with their account and ensure it is up to date to prevent issues such as sanctions or rent issues.

Overall, we provide a One Stop Service; families can attend the drop-in for any issue ranging from reading a letter to preventing an eviction. We engage with various services to encourage community cohesion and to empower the families to access services with confidence. We work in partnership with several agencies to provide health initiatives on site at MSH. Families are predominantly self-referrals and from within the community. Referrals also come from various agencies who need support for their BAMER clients.
