Mary Seacole House held a Mental Health Awareness Week Event at Kuumba Imani Millennium Centre on 10th May 2017 from 10-3pm.
Throughout the day 25 Members enjoyed Tea, Coffee, Toast & Fruit pots (donated to us by Tesco Park Road). We had a Mental Health quiz, a Mental Health word search, sweepstake, bingo, information sharing & discussions regarding the Mental Health Foundation’ Theme: Surviving or thriving?
We discussed the following questions with Members and here's what they said;
How many of us are surviving or thriving, and the difference between the two…
“I feel like im just about surviving. Deal with things the best I can at times even though I struggle every day, I manage to go out, go to groups. Hate being stuck on my own, so do everything I can to try help myself, even though I do need more support.”
“You would never know as problems can be disguised.”
“More people are surviving. Surviving = getting through the day with support (medication/therapy). Thriving = being able to cope with life with little or no support.”
“Myself I am surviving. The difference between the two are not far apart. The help you get from organisations, professionals, family make all the difference.”
“Surviving – get on with day. Thriving – looking forward to.”
“I couldn’t say how many all different degrees of stress etc. different status of illness my guess is 60/40 suffer more than less.”
“I think im surviving at the moment but I would love to be thriving and be happy and have no cures at all but I know I will get there.”
“At the moment I am barely getting by, just surviving going from day to day. I have been asking for help from the NHS and anything available in the community but help has been hard to get and insufficient. Life is one crisis after another. If the system had given me necessary intervention from early on I could have been functional by now.”
Why some communities are under strain and what government can do to support them to thrive…
“Think government needs to put more money in to mental health services also money into prevention services too as they keep people stable in community. Also there is any help if you need it in a crisis, just come see you but most of time nothing changes.”
“Access to day centre (lower costs). Support the day centres. Ask other members to support/work with others. Low impact exercise classes, maybe weights also. Better public knowledge of mental health.”
“Government should provide more funding for mental health services. This will enable more staff to be employed and more support for service users.”
“Give them more money.”
“Liverpool is a city under strain, and struggles with a lack of finance, from the government. I would think that metropolitan cities are oversubscribed with mental health patients.”
“Build more day centres. Don’t have professional enough people to deal with language barriers. Financial support. Better planning for our future. Enable us to socialising more, less stress. Funding, more fundraising, positive for local charities. ”
“More support is needed, support groups, community groups.”
“Because of government charges. Cut in benefits, people trying to cope with day to day living, surviving so getting charged a shocking price getting a medium cost is fine but not £££ for a short lesson.”
“They should be more centres open and more support on going out and about. The centre I go to are really helpful and do give me the support that I need but I would like to go out more.”
“The highest cut in government funding to local authorities is for Liverpool, about 50%. This has meant help in the community has been cut back and many services lost.”
What steps we can take to look after our mental health, building resilience to cope with the demands of life...
“Healthier eating, get sleep – helps mood, have more services for people in crisis. Talking is a good way of dealing with things. Try different things to do, groups/activities, don’t close yourself off to everyone. I think a lot of people could be helped if they talked.”
“Visit family, visit friends, go for walks, find other support groups, and take up exercise, self-belief.”
“Have more day centres, support centres.”
“Get out, go for a walk or go with day centre.”
“More support from organisations, professionals, family.”
“Keep clean, get out a lot. Come to Mary Seacole House for help. Visit new places. Keeping active. Support worker help. Drinking makes things worse.”
“Keep active, take a break, and drink sensibly.”
“Enjoy visiting family, keep active, eat well, more groups that have hobbies alike, show the world who you are, keep in touch with friends etc. friends are good to open out to who listen & advice. Understanding.”
“Organisations like Mary Seacole House are picking up the slack, Mary Seacole House provide an invaluable role in the community for helping people deal with life who suffer from mental ill health – medication, eating well, not being isolated. If people are functioning members of society, contributing, then it costs the government less. There has to be more targeted help available; appropriate counselling and therapies, alternative therapies, funding to be re-instated for organisations especially including charities to be able to carry out their work without severe stress for staff.”
